Caught between European visions of the future and an authoritarian turn toward the past, Georgia has been an EU accession candidate since 2023. While around 80% of the population support EU membership, negotiations are currently suspended due to the government’s pro-Russian course. Driven by hopes for economic stability and democratic participation, young people, in particular, have been peacefully protesting in Tbilisi for years.
Working within this field of tension, Georgian artist Zauri Matikashvili explores questions of belonging, labor, and intergenerational conflict. In Made in Europe, a video and installation-based exhibition, he traces the decades-long journeys of his father, who transported second-hand goods from Western Europe to Georgia to resell them.
Through routes, materials, and memory, the exhibition weaves personal history with broader social and political transformations—unfolding as a quiet yet persistent counter-movement and a form of human poetry.
A collaboration between bsmnt, Leipzig, and You Might Also Like e.V.
